Guide to Indian Passport Renewal/ Re-issue – Documents, Process
Introduction
The following is a step-by-step guide on how to get an Indian passport renewal or re-issue processed. This guide will be helpful if you have lost your passport or need to change some personal details in your existing passport.
Indian Passport Renewal vs Re-Issue
There are two kinds of applications: Passport renewal and re-issue.
Indian passport renewal is when you apply for a new passport after your old one has already expired. You can renew your passport online or by submitting an application form with all required documents to the local Passport Seva Kendra (PSK). You will have to pay a fee at PSK counters, or online through a bank payment gateway.
Passport re-issue is when you apply for a new passport because your old one has been lost, stolen or damaged beyond recognition. In such cases, it is highly recommended that you visit the nearest Indian embassy/consulate in person with all required documents as there will be no postal services available in this case either!
Passport Renewal – Documents Required
A passport renewal application form is duly signed by the applicant/applicant’s legal guardian. In the case of a minor, the parent(s) or legal guardian should sign in their own handwriting on an additional sheet along with the photocopy of identity proof (if needed).
Self-attested photocopies of the first two and last two pages of the passport and any page having an endorsement/ observation, if any. If the applicant has availed the facility of PCC then copies of all the previous passports along with their photocopies along with PCC counterfoil must be submitted by him/her at SPV counters (which will be provided at each Passport Seva Kendra for submission).
When can you Renew or Re-issue an Indian Passport?
You can apply for the renewal of your passport before the expiry of the present document. In case you are applying for an Indian Passport Renewal, you need to submit a photocopy of your original passport along with its pages that contain your photo and other personal details.
If a minor change in personal details is required, then it can be done by submitting a form along with supporting documentation like a marriage certificate or birth certificate, etc. However, in case if it is not possible to correct the errors without changing the issued date on page one (1) of the passport then it will have to be reissued instead of being renewed only
Step 1: Register Online Account at Passport Website
Visit the Indian Passport website
Click on the link to register for a new account. You will be directed to a form where you need to provide details such as name, date of birth, country of citizenship, and email address.
Fill out the form with all the required details.
Once you have filled out the form, click on the “Register” button at the bottom right corner of your screen. You will receive an email confirming your registration within 15 minutes.
To activate your account, follow the instructions given in this email.
Step 2: Fill out Passport Application Online
Fill Passport Application Online
You can also apply for a passport online. If you are applying for the first time then click on ‘New Passport’ if you want to renew an existing passport then click on ‘Renewal Application’. You will be asked to choose from any of these options:
Ordinary (Normal) Passport: For visiting friends and family, going on vacation, etc. This is the most common type of Indian passport and has 36 pages with black & white photos in it.
Diplomatic/Official Passport: These are mostly used by Government officials working abroad or members of their families going along with them. They have 60 pages instead of 36 (36+24) pages and are extremely hard to get as they are issued only after approval from the Ministry of External Affairs Delhi Main Office so don't waste your time trying unless you know someone who knows someone high up in MEA!
Emergency Certificate (EC): This type is meant only for emergency situations like medical emergencies where there might not be enough time left before the flight departs hence EC may come in handy when there's no other option available but needs an emergency exit out country immediately!
Step 3: Pay and Book a Slot or Walk–in, Print Application Receipt :
Pay and Book a Slot or Walk–in, Print Application Receipt :
Now that you have filled out the form, it is time to pay the fees. You can do so either online or at PSK. The payment modes available are:
Online Payment (Net Banking) : e-NACH / IMPS / Credit Card / Debit Card
Offline Payment (Cash Demand Draft) at PSK.
Step 4: Documents List for Passport Re-issue or Renewal
You will need to submit the following documents for passport re-issue or renewal:
Passport Application Form (Form 2A)
Two photographs (size 50-52 mm x 70 mm) of passport size taken in color against white background with full length showing the head from top of shoulders to toes, bareheaded with hair falling upwards and covered shoulders with plain white cloth such as handkerchief or saree.
Proof of identity/identification/address etc. as per your requirement as given below:
Proof of Identity – Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Driving License, Voter ID Card issued by Election Commission. The applicant can also submit other forms that include your name on it like telephone bills or electricity bills etc. But these documents should not have any stamp of residence proof because they have no validity in India except for certain cases like when a partnership deed is submitted then it must have the address mentioned on it but usually companies don’t give partnership deeds at all so it is better to take any other document instead of this one otherwise if you apply using partnership deed then there might be some problems later on during verification process which is quite a time consuming and frustrating too!
Step 5: Go to Passport Office (PSK) for an Appointment
You will need to carry the following documents to the Passport Office:
The original passport that you are surrendering, if applicable. You cannot use a photocopy of your passport as proof of identity or date of birth.
A copy of your current passport (the one with which you are renewing). If this is not possible, then a copy of the previous page containing information such as your photo and name should suffice.
A photocopy of each page in your old passport that contains any entry/exit stamps. If there are no such stamps on those pages, then copies must be provided for each page from inside back cover until reaching first blank page within this section. These include all visa pages and pages with endorsements such as ‘No Objection Certificate’ etc., along with any other relevant application forms for renewal or reissue including Form G2S or Form G2S1 (if applicable).
